  • Wide playlist support - covers every playlist format I knew about and some I didn't.
  • Transcode to all the major formats (and Speex - was surprised to see that).
  • Great Tag editor, including a fingerprinting system to try and guess the song tags.
  • This can give a vague idea of how the song sounds based on jumps, drops, volume changes, etc.

  • The "mood" bars - I don't even know how to quite explain them - give a quick wave form look at the overall file.
  • I know most people prefer the song/artist scanning, but this capability is my favorite part of Foobar
  • View your own drive by the built-in filesystem.
  • Devices support - like Songbird, supports quite a few, although I wasn't able to test this in detail.
  • Songbird seemed to be trying to do something along these lines but that involved signing into Facebook or something (I lost interest when it looked like they were pushing for Facebook integration). Additionally, the search tool on top of this is extremely powerful, helping find an amazing amount of media resources. Where it excels is someplace completely new to me: WIDE suport for all sorts of different online music services including Spotify, Soundcloud, even Google Drive.
  • Not as familiar/extensible as Winamp and its knockoffs (like AIMP).
  • Not as pretty/cross-platform as Songbird.
  • It looks good, has broad format support, plays everything you'd expect, and is clearly put together well. Very interesting program: seems to touch every area of music players well, without doing any of them exceptionally well.

    Whereas the portable version of Amarok is barely usable at this time (moreover, the 2.x series is a little bloated for my taste), Clementine is a very good option for those who want to test a feature-rich player of that style. Copy music to your iPod, iPhone, MTP or mass-storage USB player.Remote control using a Wii Remote, MPRIS or the command-line.
